Resources for Finding Peace in a Crazy World

A new year is typically a time of optimism for the year ahead. But this year, political and economic turmoil feel like they’re at an all-time high, at home and abroad. Canadians are stressed and feeling uneasy about the future. Staying informed, speaking out, and getting involved in causes you believe in are all important. Equally important is taking care of yourself. We’ve gathered a few resources to help …

Practice Mindfulness

Meditation has been shown to relieve anxiety and stress, reduce inflammation, and improve memory. There are tons of resources available to help your practice, whether you’re a complete newbie or it’s already part of your routine. Insight Timer is a free app that offers ad-free meditation guides, music and mini-talks from teachers around the world.

Take Control of Your Own Finances

The reality of rising prices and an economic downturn can make us feel helpless. But there are still steps you can take to improve your personal position and future-proof your finances. Run by the Credit Counselling Society, MyMoneyCoach.ca provides free tools, guides, and tips to help you budget, manage money, find ways to save, and manage debt.

Manage Difficult Conversations

The topics of politics, religion, and finances are typically taboo but increasingly unavoidable. Because these topics are so tied to our identities, disagreement can easily escalate. When difficult conversations arise try to focus on some fundamental conflict management techniques. This doesn’t mean you’ll always come away with agreement, but it can help reduce stress.

Limit Screen Time

We’re all guilty of “doomscrolling” from time to time. Our phones can be excellent tools to aid productivity and to entertain. But when they induce anxiety, it may be time for a change. Limiting use before bed and when you first wake up and putting your phone away during mealtimes are great places to start. Screen time limiting apps or devices can help you stay accountable.

Connect with a Professional

Sometimes we need an outside perspective or someone neutral to listen. A professional counsellor can provide targeted therapy, coping mechanisms, and stress management techniques to practice in your everyday life and help improve mental well-being overall. Inkblot Member Assistance Program offers free professional counselling for Health Plus PRIORITY and OPTIMUM plan members.

In a crazy world, the best we can do for ourselves and everyone around us is stay steady and hopeful.
